Day Out at UC: Color in the Undergrowth (Grades 3rd–5th)
April 27, 2024 from 10 a.m. to Noon
Come explore the world of color…in the undergrowth…with the Morehouse Lab, a world-renowned research group at the University of Cincinnati studying color and color vision in insects and spiders. Learn more about the tools we use to discover what color means for a jumping spider, from retinal physiology to courtship behavior. Spend time exploring the benefits and limits of your own color vision through games and art making. Learn how scientists build family trees of spiders, and all living things. Then join Brian Pollock in the classroom and try your hand at constructing an evolutionary family tree, called a phylogeny, by analyzing genetic relationships between adorable jumping spiders.
All activities, including a lab tour and hands-on art projects, will take place in Rieveschl Hall on UC’S main campus. This is a fully accessible facility with parking available in the Clifton Court Garage which forms the lowest floors of Rieveschl Hall. Parking will be validated after the program. Upon arrival, ride the elevator to the 7th floor to meet the Morehouse Lab team and begin your tour.
